Kyoto budget: price your route, room and transport

A quote-based Kyoto budget worksheet and the current Subway & Bus 1-Day Pass, with clear coverage limits.

On this page

Transport sources checked 26 September 2026. Room and meal prices below are deliberately left to your dated quotes; this page does not claim a hotel-price survey.

Choose the transport ticket after planning the day

The current Subway & Bus 1-Day Pass costs JPY 1,100 for an adult or JPY 550 for a child. It is valid on the activation date, not for a rolling 24 hours. It covers the city subway and city buses, plus specified routes of other bus operators. Check the official coverage list for each planned leg; do not assume all private rail, airport journeys or out-of-area buses are included.

The former bus-only pass is discontinued: sales ended 30 September 2023 and use ended 31 March 2024. See the city's withdrawal notice. Our earlier recommendation to buy that pass and recover its price in three rides was incorrect.

Compare covered fares, not the number of rides

  1. Write the departure and arrival stop for every leg of the day, including the return.
  2. Look up the ordinary fare and operator for each leg. Mark whether the pass covers it.
  3. Add only the covered fares. Compare that sum with JPY 1,100 for an adult; add uncovered fares to both options.
  4. For a different day's plan, calculate again. A day with mostly walking can produce a different answer.

Arithmetic examples, not quoted routes: if your covered adult fares total JPY 900, individual tickets cost JPY 200 less than the pass. At JPY 1,400, the pass saves JPY 300 on covered journeys. Neither example proves your actual itinerary qualifies.

Build the trip total from dated quotes

Compare room offers on equal terms

Use the same dates, occupancy, meal plan and refund conditions. Add the actual transfer cost from each address before choosing a lower room rate. A district name cannot establish a percentage saving. For the current accommodation-tax bands, see the Kyoto guide's tax section and its linked city notice.

Keep three decisions separate

A local day pass, an intercity rail pass and the cost of the entire stay are different calculations. Price intercity journeys against the relevant operator's ticket conditions; a useful local pass does not justify a nationwide rail pass. Keep your budget in yen until payment, then use the exchange rate and fees your payment provider actually offers.
