When to go

Use the seasonal notes below as broad planning guidance. They are not a forecast or a measured climate dataset. Check the local meteorological service, transport operator and site opening calendar for your dates.

Best months for what you actually want to do

  • Torres del Paine and the W / O circuits — The park's season is roughly October to April, with December-February the warmest and busiest. Refugio and campsite bookings for the W Trek open early and sell out for January by the previous winter.
  • Glacier days: Grey, Balmaceda and Serrano — Boats run October to April on the fullest timetables; summer combines long daylight (16+ hours) with the ice in best viewing light. Wind is the real forecast item — gusts over 100 km/h happen in any month.
  • Budget and quiet season — April and late September discount Puerto Natales rooms and tours while most infrastructure still runs; May to September is deep winter — some lodges close and the park turns to a day-trip proposition.

Shoulder season strategy

November (before the holidays) and March (after them) are the shoulders of choice: the weather is as changeable as ever, but beds and trails loosen up and the light stays long.

Book the W Trek refugios the day bookings open — for January that is a year ahead. Pack for four seasons in one day as a literal forecast: 15°C sun, sleet and 80 km/h gusts can share an afternoon even in February.

FAQ

How windy does it really get?

Patagonia-wind is real: December-February afternoons regularly gust 60–90 km/h on open ground, and storms push past 100 km/h. Plan exposed viewpoints for mornings and trek the west-east legs with the prevailing wind where possible.

When should I book Torres del Paine?

Refugios and campsites on the W and O circuits sell out months ahead for December-February; September-October bookings are advisable even for shoulder dates. The park itself no longer sells walk-in capacity in high season.

Is winter worth visiting?

For solitude and snow-dusted granite, yes — but expect shortened services, cold (0 to -3°C) and wind, and some trails and refugios closed. Most visitors get more from November or March.
