North Iceland: choose bases before planning the drives

Editorial correction, 26 September 2026: the previous five-day full-island loop, its driving distances and times, and undated price and wildlife-success claims have been withdrawn. This guide now helps you plan a northern stay; it is not a timed road itinerary.

Choose what the northern stay should include

The official North Iceland town guide is a starting point for Akureyri, the Mývatn area and Húsavík. Select the activities you actually want before deciding how many accommodation bases to use. A town visit, a lake-area excursion and a harbour departure have different start points.

Build a route from overnight stops

  1. Separate arrival in Iceland from arrival at your northern accommodation. Write down both endpoints.
  2. Map each day's outward and return journeys using the actual addresses. Include breaks and the time required for booked activities.
  3. Check the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration's road information for restrictions and conditions. Confirm rental-car permissions directly with the provider.
  4. Keep an alternative day close to your accommodation. Change the plan if road or weather conditions require it.

Do not use the old claim that an Egilsstaðir–Reykjavík south-coast return is a short final-day drive. Plan that separate part of an island circuit from current routing information and allow appropriate overnight stops. A highland route should never be treated as an automatic shortcut.

Book the activity, then check the logistics

Choose a shortlist around Goðafoss, the Mývatn area and Húsavík, then check the access and operator for each selected stop. Add Dettifoss or Ásbyrgi only after confirming the extra journey and current access. Use the official North Iceland destination directory to locate visits; this shortlist does not claim they all fit in one day.

For a whale-watching trip, confirm the harbour, check-in time, cancellation terms and arrangements if sailing is cancelled. Do not budget on a promised sighting rate. For geothermal bathing, consult the operator's current admission and booking conditions. For a waterfall or park visit, check the intended access route and closure notices.

Price this trip instead of a generic Iceland package

Use a shared-cost worksheet: divide only group charges (such as the actual room or car quote) by the number sharing, then add each person’s meals, admission and activities. Compare the same dates and cancellation terms. A northern address alone does not establish a discount against Reykjavík.

Add accommodation, the chosen vehicle or transfers, fuel, food and reserved activities from dated quotes. Keep flights and insurance explicit. Do not assume a fixed shoulder-season discount, free parking, a particular vehicle requirement or an unverified bath ticket price applies to your plan.

Use conditions rather than a month as permission to travel

Plan daylight-dependent drives and dark-sky viewing as separate needs. Do not choose a vehicle from a generic month rule: confirm the exact route, current restrictions and rental terms. For boat trips, rely on the operator’s sailing decision and cancellation terms.

Check road and weather information for your dates. A month label is not evidence that a particular road is open, an excursion will operate or an aurora will be visible. Do not combine a long drive and a late-night outing simply to fill the itinerary.

Where to stay: compare the actual addresses

These areas are starting points for a shortlist, not hotel endorsements or a price ranking. Compare properties for the same dates, room occupancy and cancellation terms.

Area to compareDecision to check before booking
AkureyriUse for an Akureyri-focused stay; map any out-of-town drive separately.
Reykjahlid, MyvatnCompare properties against the Mývatn stops on your route.
HusavikCheck the harbour meeting point and cancellation policy for a booked sailing.

Price the room together with transfers, taxes and any parking. Change bases only when your planned stops justify the move; there is no universal day-count rule. Check routes and seasonal service with the operator for your dates.
