Choose a focus for each day
This is an editorial shortlist, not a ranked survey or a recently tested tour. Start with the official Kyoto visitor guide to locate the places that interest you.
- Higashiyama: choose a Kiyomizu-dera visit and nearby lanes. Check the temple's own visitor information for admission and special sessions.
- Arashiyama: make the riverside and a garden or temple the day's focus; leave time between paid visits.
- Fushimi: choose how much of the Fushimi Inari walk fits your energy and weather conditions.
- Kinkaku-ji: locate the visit on the map before adding another district to the same day.
- Nara: treat this as a separate day-trip decision, with trains checked from your actual Kyoto base.
Check access for the specific venue
Outdoor paths, temple interiors and special evening events can have different rules. Confirm opening dates, admission, reservation requirements and the last entry with the operator. The earlier blanket claims about empty early mornings, summer weekday closures and fixed Nara journey times have been removed.
A usable plan includes the return journey
Put one main visit on the plan first. Add a meal, a rest and the return route before adding a second visit. In rain or heavy crowds, drop a secondary stop rather than compressing every visit. Do not assume an IC card on your phone works for every operator or every device.
Use the five-day itinerary for district grouping, the ticket comparison for costs and seasonal planning for date decisions.
